Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. How competitive is the application?  It is highly recommended that interested applicants apply early to increase their chances of being selected.  After reviewing applications and conducting interviews, between 20-30 students are selected to join our staff.  We hire incoming freshman and upperclassmen.
  2. What if I don’t have any technical skills?  That’s okay!  Our primary focus is on customer service.  Technical knowledge is undoubtedly a plus, but we have a robust support and training for Geeks to keep up to date with the latest technologies.
  3. How important is my availability?   We run two areas in the Crabbe Library, and these generally begin at 8 a.m. and go until 11:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, with shorter hours on Friday and on weekends.  The more open your schedule, the easier it is to find you work hours.  We have shifts for early mornings, daytime, late nights, and weekends.
  4. Is the job just for federal work study (FWS)?  It is not.  We prefer federal work study awards but have many positions for students who don’t qualify.  Those are called institutional work study (IWS) positions. You should still complete a FASFA, just in case you do qualify for federal funds!
  5. Do I have to be a computer science, networking, graphics design, broadcasting, or CIS major to work for the Geeks?  Definitely no!  We accept all majors, and everyone is encouraged to apply.  Throughout our training program, you will be taught the necessary skills for your position.  Your willingness to learn and take direction is needed to do well.
  6. Are there promotional opportunities available?  Yes.  We promote from within for our Geek Coordinator job.  These are the senior student staff.

Hiring Process

  1. Information Session.  Throughout the semester, we will hold information sessions so you can meet Geeks and find out what it's like to work with us.

  2. Application Process. Review the pooled position on the EKU Jobs page.  You will need to submit your resume, contact information for three (3) references, and class schedule when you apply.

To be eligible for employment as a student worker, you must be eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS) *preferable* or Institutional Work-Study (IWS).  This means:

-You must be enrolled in and actively attending classes on at least a half-time
    -Work no more than 20 hours/week or 8 hours/day

  3. Interview. When a position opens, we contact qualified candidates to set up an in-person interview.  At the interview, we will ask about your experience and qualifications.  This is also a chance for you to learn about what it's like to work for us.

  4. Hiring Decision.  After we interview applicants, we make job offers.  Then we submit your name to EKU HR for a background check.  If you pass that, you are hired by us and given a start date.

  5. Orientation.  During orientation, you will complete paperwork and learn about the rules of the road.

  6. Training.  After orientation, we will train you for the position.

  7. Probation Period.  All employees work initially under a 6-week probation period that includes weekly one-on-one feedback meetings with the Student Services Support Manager.
